MOYNAT CNY '25 Shorts

What could be more meaningful for a designer who grew up in China than creating something to celebrate Chinese New Year? With an open brief to develop a concept centered around the snake and to feature the hulu (gourd), this series highlights the joy and festive spirit of Chinese New Year with a modern take.

The first animation draws inspiration from traditional Chinese motifs such as Hakka walled villages, eaves, and the prosperous double-coin knot. It features dynamic patterns that seamlessly transition into visuals celebrating the spirit of Chinese New Year.

Patterns of Tradition

Echoes of Celebration

The second animation brings the vibrant sounds of Chinese New Year to life, capturing the festive atmosphere through a harmonious blend of sound and visuals.

Drums beat steadily, firecrackers burst into blossoms, and paper cuttings flutter gently. The hum of window lattices adds a subtle rhythm, weaving these sounds into a symphony of celebration.

Journey of Renewal

The third animation features traditional lanterns and fish-shaped lanterns from regions of China (汪满田鱼灯), with the fish lanterns reflecting a heritage of hundreds of years. A winding snake glides gracefully through the mountains, its movement mirrored by mountain contours that resemble snake skin patterns.
